An informal meeting of EU leaders was held in Cyprus on the 23rd and 24th, focusing on the Iran conflict and the resulting energy crisis, while also discussing EU common defense and the multiannual financial framework.
In an invitation letter to EU member states before the meeting, the President of the European Council stated that on the 23rd, discussions would center on the challenging geopolitical environment in the Middle East and how Europe can contribute to easing tensions in the region, promoting peace, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The President also noted that high fossil fuel prices have impacted the daily lives of EU citizens, and European leaders will discuss how to address energy issues.
Additionally, the meeting covered EU common defense topics, including exploring relevant provisions of EU treaties. According to EU treaty rules, member states must provide mutual assistance if one is subjected to armed attack. EU members aim to develop a set of operational guidelines to clarify how these clauses work in practice.
On the 24th, the meeting will discuss the next multiannual financial framework for the EU and will also explore the Middle East situation with regional leaders.
