On the 23rd, the President of the United States, Trump, posted on social media threatening that due to “no progress” in the negotiations between the US and the EU, he suggests imposing a 50% tariff on goods from the EU starting from June 1.
He also reiterated his consistent viewpoint: if goods are produced in the United States, there is no need to pay tariffs.
According to insiders, the US-EU tariff negotiations are currently at a deadlock, with the US demanding unilateral concessions from the EU to open markets to American companies, while the EU seeks to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
In response to the latest threats, an EU Commission member responsible for trade and economic security affairs stated that the trade agreement between Europe and the US must be based on mutual respect, not threats.
“Tariffs are accelerating the disconnection of the United States from the world,” said the German Foreign Minister. He expressed that the US’s threat to increase tariffs on EU goods is not beneficial for any party, and Germany will continue to support dialogue between the EU and the US.
