Trump denies being drawn in by Israel, explains reason for deciding to strike Iran.
According to news reports, on April 20, U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed that Israel did not persuade him to attack Iran.
Trump made this statement after reports emerged suggesting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had influenced his decisions.
Some figures known as Trump supporters argued that Israel had “dragged” the U.S. into the ongoing war with Iran, including commentator Tucker Carlson and Joe Kent. However, the White House repeatedly denied these accusations, calling them unfounded.
“Israel never persuaded me to go to war with Iran. The result of the events of October 7, along with my long-standing view that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons, is the reason,” Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Trump was referring to the attack by Hamas forces on Israel on October 7, 2023, which led to the conflict in the Gaza Strip and has kept the Middle East in a state of high tension to this day.
According to reports, the U.S. Congress concluded that it is unclear whether Iran, a country that backs Hamas, knew about the October 7 attack plan beforehand. Some reports indicated that the incident surprised senior Iranian officials.
“Just like the outcome in Venezuela, which the media does not like to mention, the outcome in Iran will be great,” Trump stated in his post, alluding to the U.S. campaign to raid and capture President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas earlier this year.
The U.S. leader also said that “if Iran’s new leaders are wise enough, Iran can have a great and prosperous future.”
He made this statement amid unclear prospects for negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The U.S. side affirmed it would send a delegation to Pakistan for talks before the two-week ceasefire expires, while Iran said it has not yet decided whether to sit at the negotiating table.
On April 20, a well-informed source said the U.S. delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, had not yet departed but was expected to arrive in Islamabad soon. Meanwhile, a senior Iranian source revealed that the country is considering participating in negotiations but has not made a decision.
The President of Lebanon stated that negotiations with Israel should be separate from resolving the conflict in Iran, while Tehran demands that peace in Lebanon be tied to a ceasefire agreement with the U.S.
