Ukraine has confirmed that its forces are conducting a military operation in Russia’s Kursk region. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry stated that the operation aims to protect Ukrainian territory from Russian attacks and prevent the use of the Kursk region for attacks against Ukraine.

The statement marks the first official acknowledgment by Ukraine of military activity inside Russian territory. Russian officials have reported that Ukrainian troops crossed the border and entered the Kursk region earlier this week.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had deployed additional forces to the area and was taking measures to push Ukrainian troops back across the border. The situation is ongoing.

Kursk region

The Kursk region in western Russia is historically significant for the Battle of Kursk in 1943, one of the largest tank battles in World War II, which marked a turning point on the Eastern Front. The area is also known for its rich agricultural lands and cultural heritage, including the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, a revered religious symbol. Today, the region blends its historical legacy with modern economic activities, such as mining and manufacturing.
