The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (PMK) has formed a special disaster mitigation team comprising various ministries and government agencies to mitigate disasters, especially floods that often hit Jakarta, Banten, and West Java.

“Some time ago, a major flood hit Jakarta, Bekasi, Karawang, and its surroundings. Therefore, we discussed more synergistic and comprehensive efforts. The forum agreed to form a team to formulate concrete actions in the field as well as conduct monitoring and evaluation,” the PMK Coordinating Minister remarked.

The disaster mitigation team was formed comprehensively due to the significant impact of the floods, which resulted in numerous victims and substantial economic losses.

The team comprises senior members from each ministry and agency, including the Jakarta Provincial Government, the West Java Provincial Government, and the Banten Provincial Government.

Several representatives were present, including the Ministry of Public Works; the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning; the Ministry of Environment; the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency; the National Disaster Mitigation Agency; the Ministry of Defense; the Ministry of Finance; the Coordinating Ministry for Food; and the Provincial Governments of Jakarta, West Java, and Banten.

It was stated that all ministries and agencies involved in the disaster mitigation team have agreed to handle the flood problem, especially in the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Cianjur.

The focus will be on completing the embankment in collaboration with the local government.

“The Ministry of Public Works will complete the embankment construction, with 16.5 km remaining for Jakarta and 19.6 km still needed for Bekasi. This project will be assisted by the local government,” it was remarked.

It was also stated that the National Disaster Mitigation Agency and the West Java Provincial Government agreed to implement weather engineering from March 27 to March 30.

“The weather engineering will start today with support from the West Java Provincial Government and the military. The weather engineering will be focused on the West Java area because Banten has relatively safe conditions with light rainfall,” it was explained.

Development and relocation had been conducted for several areas inundated in early March.

“Recovery has been carried out. Broken bridges had been rebuilt; damaged houses had been repaired, along with some relocation. It took place in Bogor District, Bekasi City, Bekasi District, Tangerang, and other affected areas,” it was revealed.

Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia, located on the northwest coast of Java. Historically known as Sunda Kelapa and later Batavia under Dutch colonial rule, it became the center of the Dutch East India Company’s trading empire in the 17th century. Today, it is a bustling, sprawling metropolis that serves as the nation’s political and economic hub, though it faces challenges with congestion and flooding.

Banten

Banten is a historic province on the western tip of Java, Indonesia, known for the ruins of the **Banten Sultanate**, a major Islamic port kingdom that flourished from the 16th to 18th centuries. Its most famous site is the **Great Mosque of Banten**, built in the 16th century, which showcases a unique architectural blend of Javanese, Chinese, and European influences. The area’s significance declined after the Dutch colonial power dismantled the sultanate and shifted trade to Batavia (modern-day Jakarta).

West Java

West Java is a province on the Indonesian island of Java, historically home to the powerful Sunda Kingdom and later the Sultanate of Banten. It is renowned for its diverse cultural heritage, including traditional arts like *Wayang Golek* (wooden puppet theater) and *Angklung* (bamboo musical instrument). The region also features significant natural attractions, such as the volcanic highlands of Bandung and the coastal beauty of Pangandaran.

Bekasi

Bekasi is a city in West Java, Indonesia, located on the eastern border of the capital, Jakarta. Historically, it was part of the 5th-century Tarumanagara kingdom, with archaeological evidence like the **Bekasi Inscription** dating to that era. Today, it is primarily known as a major industrial and residential satellite city, forming a key part of the greater Jakarta metropolitan area.

Karawang

Karawang is a regency in West Java, Indonesia, historically significant as a major rice-producing region often called the “rice barn” of Java. Its modern history is marked by early industrialization, including the establishment of one of Indonesia’s first large-scale textile factories in the 19th century. The area also holds national importance due to the “Rengasdengklok Incident” in 1945, where nationalist youths brought Sukarno and Hatta prior to the proclamation of Indonesia’s independence.

Bogor

Bogor is a city in West Java, Indonesia, historically known as “Buitenzorg” during the Dutch colonial era when it served as a summer retreat for colonial governors. It is most famous for the Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor), one of the world’s oldest and largest botanical gardens, founded in 1817. The city’s cool, rainy climate and its historic presidential palace also contribute to its reputation as a significant scientific and cultural center.

Depok

Depok is a city in West Java, Indonesia, historically known as a 17th-century agricultural estate established by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It was notably settled by a community of Protestant converts from the islands of Sulawesi, whose descendants formed a distinct local society. Today, it has grown into a major university and residential hub, part of the greater Jakarta metropolitan area.

Tangerang

Tangerang is a city in Indonesia’s Banten province, located on the western outskirts of Jakarta. Historically, it was a significant settlement for Chinese immigrants in the 17th century, earning it the nickname “Benteng” (Fort) and shaping its cultural heritage. Today, it is a major industrial and manufacturing hub within the Jakarta metropolitan area.
