Awareness of the importance of environmentally friendly waste management continues to grow among the residents of Depok City.
This was evident in the recent waste sorting and maggot cultivation training attended by residents of RW 05 Bukit Sawangan Indah (BSI), Duren Mekar Village, on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
This event also marked the inauguration of the first Maggot House in the area.
With a collaborative spirit between residents and the government, the training aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Cipayung Landfill while creating new economic opportunities through maggot cultivation.
The Acting Head of Duren Mekar Village explained that this initiative is not just about technical education but also about fostering environmental awareness at the household level.
“The goal is to increase residents’ awareness and ability to separate organic and inorganic waste, thereby reducing the amount of waste sent to the Cipayung Landfill,” he said.
He added that this training is expected to lay the foundation for an independent waste management system in RW 05 BSI.
During the training, the Depok City Environment and Hygiene Agency (DLHK) provided practical guidance on easy-to-implement household waste sorting techniques.
Meanwhile, the team from the Maggot Sukmajaya Waste Management Unit (UPS) shared knowledge on maggot cultivation, from initial breeding stages to processing maggots into economically valuable products such as animal feed or compost.
The Acting Village Head emphasized that active community participation is key to the program’s success.
“We hope the RW 05 Maggot House can serve as a model for integrated waste management in the community, as well as a means of education and empowerment for residents,” he said.
The Maggot House is expected to function not only as a processing center but also as a community learning hub for creating an environmentally based circular economy.
In addition to environmental benefits by reducing organic waste, maggot cultivation has proven to be eco-friendly and highly profitable.
Through this training, Duren Mekar residents are encouraged to start at home by consistently sorting waste and incorporating maggots as part of a sustainable environmental solution.
With this small but impactful step, RW 05 BSI demonstrates that change can begin at the community level.
The Maggot House stands as tangible proof that when communities are given space, information, and support, active participation flourishes, creating a cleaner, healthier, and more productive environment.
