Taking bribes of over 137 million yuan! Former Jiangxi Provincial Political Consultative Conference Party Secretary Tang Yijun sentenced to life imprisonment in first trial.
On February 2, 2026, the Xiamen Intermediate People’s Court in Fujian Province publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the bribery case of Tang Yijun, former Party Secretary and Chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. The defendant Tang Yijun was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of accepting bribes, deprived of political rights for life, and all of his personal property was confiscated. The illicit money and goods obtained from his bribery and any accrued interest that were recovered in the case were ordered to be turned over to the state treasury according to law, with any shortfall to continue to be recovered.
Upon trial, it was ascertained: From 2006 to 2022, the defendant Tang Yijun took advantage of his positions, including Deputy Secretary of the Ningbo Municipal Committee and Secretary of the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection of Zhejiang Province, Deputy Secretary of the Ningbo Municipal Committee and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Ningbo Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Member of the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Ningbo Municipal Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Liaoning Provincial Committee and Governor, and Party Secretary and Minister of the Ministry of Justice, as well as the convenience created by his authority or position, to seek benefits for relevant units and individuals in matters such as company listings, land repurchases, bank loans, and case handling. He illegally accepted money and property totaling more than 137 million yuan.
The Xiamen Intermediate People’s Court held that the defendant Tang Yijun’s actions constituted the crime of accepting bribes. The amount of bribes accepted by Tang Yijun was particularly huge and caused particularly significant losses to the interests of the state and the people, and he should be punished according to law. Considering that there were circumstances of attempted crime within his bribery offenses, that he truthfully confessed his crimes after being brought to justice, voluntarily disclosed most of the bribery facts not yet known to the handling authorities, pleaded guilty and expressed remorse, actively returned the illicit gains, and that all actual bribes received have been recovered, which constitute statutory and discretionary circumstances for lenient punishment, he could be given a lighter punishment according to law. The court thus rendered the aforementioned judgment.
The Xiamen Intermediate People’s Court publicly tried the case on September 11, 2025. During the trial, the procuratorial organ presented relevant evidence, the defendant Tang Yijun and his defender cross-examined the evidence, both the prosecution and defense fully presented their arguments under the court’s direction, Tang Yijun made a final statement, and expressed in court that he pleaded guilty and repented.
