In anticipation of the Eid al-Adha celebrations, Bandung City Government has conducted inspections on the suitability of sacrificial animals in various sale locations. Currently, 70 percent of the total sacrificial animals in Bandung City have been declared fit for slaughter.

The remaining 30 percent have been declared unhealthy due to various factors, including being underage. In total, nearly 10,000 sacrificial animals have entered Bandung City up to today.

“So far, almost over 10,000 sacrificial animals have entered Bandung City. Our screening results show that 30 percent are unhealthy, meaning underage because we must follow the tenets determined by sharia,” said Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan while inspecting the sale premises at Pussenkaf on Tuesday (03/06/2025).

Meanwhile, the remaining 70 percent, equivalent to about 7,000 animals, are declared healthy and fit for slaughter. Among all the sacrificial animals in Bandung City, two-thirds are sheep and goats, the rest predominantly cows, and three buffaloes.

Farhan stated that the ante-mortem process for these sacrificial animals is carried out to ensure that all animals slaughtered and consumed by the community are healthy. It also anticipates the possible presence of contagious diseases in the sacrificial animals.

“Because in any case, if one sacrificial animal is detected with a contagious disease, we must conduct overall screening. Rather than waiting, it’s better to be cautious and conduct inspections,” explained Farhan.

No Sacrificial Animals with FMD in Bandung City

Separately met, Head of the Food Security and Agriculture Department (Dispangtan) of Bandung City, Gingin Ginanjar, stated that 30 percent of sacrificial animals declared unfit are based on several conditions. The major factor is being underage.

“The requirements for sacrifice are not just a matter of being healthy but also suitable. It was found that those are unfit because they are underage. Some are sold at a young age, about 20 percent. The animals that are suitable and healthy are 70 percent,” explained Gingin in Cicendo, Monday (02/06/2025).

The remaining 10 percent, he said, were found with symptoms of mild health disturbances. However, he assured that so far, no animals have been detected with symptoms of contagious diseases like FMD.

“The unhealthiness is not caused by contagious diseases, just minor ailments because many are sold on the roadside. There are conditions like weather adaptation, improper feeding resulting in diarrhea, or eye irritation due to wind,” he explained.

Screening and inspections are still ongoing. If sacrificial animals are found with other health issues like wounds or lack of appetite, those animals will first be separated for treatment.

“Symptoms such as lethargy, decreased appetite, and wounds on feet will be immediately anticipated, separated, and medicated. They will be isolated initially, then rechecked until healthy and sellable,” he stated.
