Anton Leshchinsky, a candidate of art history and professor, has been appointed acting rector of the Shchepkin Higher Theater School (Institute), according to an announcement.

“Anton Leshchinsky, candidate of art history and professor, has been appointed acting rector of the Shchepkin Higher Theater School (Institute) at the State Academic Maly Theater of Russia. He has been teaching at the Shchepkin School for 28 years and has been leading the university’s master’s program since September 2022. In total, he has participated in the creation of more than 25 productions for the Maly Theater School,” the announcement stated.

It was noted that Anton Leshchinsky holds the title of Honored Artist of Russia and in 2022 was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland Medal, II degree.

Shchepkin Higher Theater School

The Shchepkin Higher Theater School, founded in Moscow in 1779, is one of the oldest and most prestigious drama schools in Russia. It was established by a decree of Empress Catherine the Great and is affiliated with the Maly Theatre, training actors in the traditions of Russian psychological realism. The school is named after the renowned 19th-century actor Mikhail Shchepkin, a founding figure of realistic acting in Russian theater.

The State Academic Maly Theater of Russia, founded in 1756, is one of the oldest and most prestigious dramatic theaters in Moscow. Often called the “House of Ostrovsky” for its close association with the playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, it has been a bastion of Russian realistic theater and a guardian of the country’s classical theatrical traditions for centuries.
