St. Helena Island
St. Helena Island is a remote volcanic British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, most famous as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile and death from 1815 until 1821. Previously an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa, the island’s history is deeply tied to the British East India Company, which colonized it in the 17th century. Today, its significance stems from this unique colonial history and its remarkable isolation.
