Congress took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday regarding US President Donald Trump’s recent actions and comments, saying “Friend is no longer a friend.”

“Friend is no longer a friend” is a line from a famous song by the late playback singer Mukesh.

“Take a look at what President Trump has done since mid-May 2025. He has claimed 45 times in four different countries and at the United Nations that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan which caused Operation Sindhu to abruptly stop.”

According to him, Trump hosted Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at a luncheon at the White House, while Munir is the same person whose inflammatory and communally malicious statements set the stage for the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

“Trump spoke about further strengthening the US-Pakistan economic partnership. According to some reports, he has given the green light to a strategic mutual defense agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.”

The Congress General Secretary said the US President imposed punitive tariffs on India’s exports to the US, disrupted the H1B visa system, and targeted and punished India over its long-standing economic relations with Russia.

“According to reports, Trump is scheduled to meet Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the White House today.”

“What happened to Namaste Trump? What happened to Howdy Modi? What happened to hug diplomacy?”

After this, a dig was taken: “Friend is no longer a friend…”

United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after World War II to promote peace, security, and cooperation among nations. Headquartered in New York City, it provides a forum for its 193 member states to address global issues like conflict resolution, human rights, and sustainable development. Its founding was a direct response to the failures of its predecessor, the League of Nations, with the aim of preventing another such devastating global conflict.

White House

The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. Located in Washington, D.C., it was designed by James Hoban and its construction was completed in 1800. It has been the home of every U.S. president since John Adams and was rebuilt after being set on fire by British troops in 1814.

Pahalgam

Pahalgam is a scenic hill station in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, situated at the confluence of the Lidder River and the Sheshnag Lake. Historically, it was a humble shepherd’s village but gained prominence as a major base camp for pilgrims undertaking the annual Amarnath Yatra to the sacred Amarnath Cave. Today, it is a popular tourist destination renowned for its breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, lush meadows, and trout-filled rivers.

Operation Sindhu

“Operation Sindhu” is not a place or cultural site, but a military operation conducted by the Indian Navy. It was launched in 1988 to thwart a coup attempt in the Maldives by a group of mercenaries. The operation successfully restored the legitimate government and demonstrated India’s capability for rapid military intervention in the region.

H1B visa system

The H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa category in the United States that allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. It was created by the Immigration Act of 1990 to help American companies fill gaps in their workforce with highly skilled professionals, particularly in fields like technology, engineering, and science. The program is now a central part of the U.S. tech industry but is also subject to annual caps and ongoing debate about its impact on the domestic labor market.

Namaste Trump

“Namaste Trump” was a major public event held in Ahmedabad, India, in February 2020 to welcome then-U.S. President Donald Trump. It was a large-scale rally modeled after the “Howdy, Modi” event held in the U.S. for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, symbolizing the diplomatic ties between the two nations. The event took place at a newly constructed stadium and was one of the largest gatherings ever addressed by a visiting head of state in India.

Howdy Modi

“Howdy Modi” was a large community-organized event held in Houston, Texas, in September 2019 to welcome the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. It was a significant diplomatic and cultural gathering, co-hosted with then-US President Donald Trump, and celebrated the Indian diaspora’s influence in the United States. The event highlighted the strengthening strategic partnership between India and the US.

hug diplomacy

“Hug diplomacy” is not a physical place but a term describing a diplomatic strategy, famously associated with former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. It refers to the policy of proactively and warmly engaging with China through close personal and economic ties to foster a strong bilateral relationship. This approach was a hallmark of Rudd’s first term (2007-2010), aiming to leverage his deep knowledge of Chinese language and culture to navigate complex geopolitical issues.
